Visual databases for marine training and simulation are unique because most of a visual database’s terrain is flat at sea level and very repetitive, and a part of it includes topography, 3D structures, buildings, and artifacts. For the sea part, we recommend the use of an excellent wave model module that would facilitate control of sea states, wave height, wave length, alignment with the wind, and so on. Sea state and waves influence all marine vessels based on specific characteristics and parameters that control the appearance of a vessel’s bow, stern, and hull wakes.

 

The land part of the visual databases includes the topography of the land and shores, buildings seen from sea for coastal navigation, navigational aids like buoys and beacons, and of course a 3D model of the port. Ports and marinas can be created as generic or typical models or as specific models depending on the purpose of the training system. If entry into a port is part of the training aims, a realistic and accurate 3D model is required. Port modeling includes buildings, hangars, cranes, breakwaters, and quays that are accurate in location and height above the water.
